"Cavan really has a vibrant community sector with over 326 registered community groups; 135 volunteer organisations; and 891 volunteers". That’s according to the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, who was speaking at the opening of Cavan’s Volunteer Centre yesterday.
The Minister pointed to how the implementation of Ireland’s National Volunteering Strategy is well underway. She said the local volunteer centre will provide vital support to communities the length and breadth of the county.
Minister Humphreys added that she wanted to create a society where volunteering was promoted, valued, facilitated and supported so that people could contribute to developing and maintaining vibrant, inclusive and sustainable communities.
"I am very proud that my Department is to the fore of supporting volunteering and implementing our Volunteering strategy. Because every community relies on the commitment and contribution of volunteers.
From sporting pursuits to Tidy Towns to community care, many people’s lives are made better as a direct result of people who are willing and determined to give up their spare time, and indeed expertise. Our volunteers are champions – just like all involved in this wonderful centre," she added.
