Midlands Northwest MEP, Chris MacManus, has called for clarity as the ECB and EU Commission back the 'right to use cash'.
He says that pending upcoming legislation, the right to use cash must be respected and clarified.
However, Mr McManus also highlighted that the new rules will take years to put in place, even if all goes smoothly politically.
He pointed out that, the EU Commission has stated its intention to legislate for 'the mandatory acceptance of cash, at full face value',
However, he warns that this stands in direct contrast to the Irish Government's stance which, he says, places the onus on retailers by asking
them to inform customers of the payment options in advance.
The local Sinn Fein MEP added he believes the use of cash should be protected and the right to use it insisted upon until the legislation is
implemented.
