Hotels are not for permanent living and while they have helped people from the Ukraine who are fleeing the war, it's not a long-term solution to the problem.
That's according to the manager of the Slieve Russell Hotel in Cavan, Tony Waldron, who is calling in the Government not to raise the VAT rate from 9% in March.
The vice president of the Hotels Federation of Ireland says 20% of bed space in the country's hotels has now been lost to emergency accommodation.
He says it's having a negative impact on tourism with travel from UK already down 10% to 12% this year.
Mr Waldron added the Government needs to support hotels with bed supply over the next two years.
