Niall McGuire bought land six years ago in Derrynoose close to the Clontibret border and wanted to build a new home in a traditional style but with a modern take.
Niall created a thatched cottage that from the outside could be a few hundred years but in fact it's a new build. But with the pressures of an all mod cons society the number of thatched cottages has dwindled and they have become a rare sight in 2023.
This local man wanted to recreate times gone by. Niall has worked with tradespeople and done as much work on the home as he can himself, by plastering the outside, helping with the roof, putting down floors and doing the wiring. He has also had a lot of help from friends and family along the way.
Sporting pops of green throughout, lavish high ceilings and even a few unexpected surprises, this home recreates the past while bringing in elements of the future. Niall's home even featured on RTE's popular show home of the year in recent weeks and he said it was great to receive such lovely feedback from people right across the country.
