A local man has opened up about his own mental health struggles in an effort to raise awareness.
Martin Tynan suffered from depression from the age of the 15 or 16 in the mid 1980's. He said that he turned to alcohol in attempt to block out his depression which in turn only made things worse.
His lowest period in his life found him at Virginia Lake with his intentions to end his own life. The father of four ended up in hospital for a number of weeks over his unhealthy relationship with alcohol.
He said meeting his now wife and the support from his family was the turning point for him. Over a number of years now Martin has fundraised and has highlighted the importance of good mental Health.
He has been talking to Northern Sound about his life experiences and what he has had to overcome through his life.
