Owners and occupiers of lands along public roads are being asked to ensure that roadside hedges and trees do not present as hazardous for road users. Hedge cutting is permitted over a six month period from the 1st of September to the last day of February.
Monaghan Councillor, Sean Gilliland, is reminding all landowners to carry out the necessary works as soon as possible. He says that the majority of farmers are proactive when it comes to hedge trimming. Cllr Gilliland added that the effort provides more visibility for motorists and makes the road wider.
"The life of the road is very important when the hedges are kept maintained because they let the winter sun in to thaw the road when there is frost," he continued. "If it's overgrown, there will be stretches of the road that won't be thawed out at 2pm in the day and that's dangerous."
