Local historian hopes to preserve heritage of ancient Cootehill graveyard

The old graveyard dates back to the Middle Ages.

A local historian hopes to repair an ancient Cootehill graveyard so its heritage and history can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Patrick Cassidy teaches at Cavan Institute and is also a member of the Cootehill Town Team, and he's taking on a long-term project to restore the Old Church Street graveyard.

The old graveyard dates back to the Middle Ages and is the original site of the Drumgoon Parish Church of Ireland.

The Church was then demolished and replaced with a mausoleum, which protects a crypt that houses the Coote family.

The last recorded burial was in the 1940s and the site has run into disrepair since.

Patrick says he's always on the lookout for volunteers and explained that he's following best practice to protect the graveyard:
