A local HAP tenant is pleading with the council to inspect her rented property.
Triona Coates is living in a stone farm house which she says has no proper heating, mould on the walls, and dysfunctional plumbing in the toilet.
She has begged the council to carry out an inspection of the property, however, in a statement to Northern Sound they said the number of inspections carried out by the local authority has been restricted by Covid-19 but they have commenced a programme of virtual inspections as of July.
Triona says anyone could end up in this situation and ‘it seems as if no-one cares’:
The landlord was also contacted for a response but said he had ‘no comment at this time’.
Full statement from Cavan County Council:
"The number of private rented dwelling inspections carried out by the local authority has been severely restricted by Covid-19. Cavan County Council has commenced a programme of virtual inspections – as of July 2021, 21 landlords had been issued virtual inspections requests and two landlords had returned the required information. Enforcement action in relation to non-compliance is carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Private Rented Dwellings Act."
