A number of groups across Co Monaghan are set to receive funding under the Heritage Week Grant Scheme. Kara Ward who is the Heritage Officer for Monaghan County Council applied for funding from the heritage council with a total of 13 applications from Co Monaghan deemed eligible. National Heritage Week which takes place next month celebrates Ireland’s cultural, built and natural heritage. Speaking to Northern Sound, Ms Ward believes that Heritage Week is a great way to introduce people, particular those of the younger generation to their own heritage. She added that it brings together volunteers, community groups and heritage enthusiasts to share their experience, knowledge culture and practices.
"The Heritage Week Grant Scheme is a way for us to try help local groups who are running events in the county and to offer support financially, especially when many of these groups run on a voluntary basis," explained Kara. "It's a nice way to show them that we do support them. The week includes various walks, research projects, tours, genealogy workshops, talks on cures, traditional music etc. This is such a good opportunity to introduce people to their heritage. It's also a great opportunity to show the younger generation different aspects of our history and to hopefully spark an interest that will encourage them to carry this on for generations to come."
