A local GP has warned that the decision to limit the AstraZeneca vaccine to the over 60 age group is a "setback that will create anxiety and concern".
Thousands of vaccines that had been planned for today have been cancelled as a result.
The vaccine is now only being given to people over 60 following some rare blood clots in younger people.
Monaghan GP, Dr Illona Duffy, says these rare blood clots are more likely to occur in younger people, which slightly reduces the "risk-benefit ratio" of the AstraZeneca vaccine to this cohort.
She told The Joe Finnegan Show that it's correct to "err on the side of caution" and dismissed claims that the over 60s are "guinea pigs" for the vaccine:
