A local GP says there is hope despite predicting high numbers in the region in the coming weeks.

Aideen Brides, a doctor in Monaghan, says people let their guard down at Christmas and it seems the rate of infection is much faster now with whole families testing positive now.

She says that the new strain appears to be more infectious and is urging anyone with any cold or flu-like symptoms to isolate regardless of their diagnosis.

This morning her surgery had 40 phone calls, with 20 relating to Covid-19 and she says there is huge anxiety amongst those who have been following the guidelines:
