The number of fixed charge notices handed out by Gardai in Cavan and Monaghan rose by almost 20 per cent compared to 2018.
If you drive over the speed limit, you get three penalty points and a fixed-charge fine of 80 euro, which increases to 120 euro if you don’t pay within 28 days.
Freedom of Information figures show that in Cavan and Monaghan, 3,268 fines were issued in 2018 and 3,881 in 2019.
This 18 per cent rise means they took in €618,760 in penalties over the last 24 months.
More than 20 million euro worth of penalties were settled in the whole of Ireland in the last two years.
