A local Game Council representative says conservation is the largest part of gun club activities.
Today marks the start of the pheasant shooting season, which is back after being cancelled at the last minute last year due to Covid.
Roscommon native Dan Curley is Chair of the National Association of Regional Game Councils and is based in County Monaghan.
He says the biggest draw for the day is the excitement of getting out and seeing the dogs work on the ground, with shooting playing a very small part.
Dan told The Joe Finnegan Show that outside of hunting season, clubs do a lot of work to protect animals.
