A local councilor says Gardaí need to be given special powers to serve penalties to those breaching Covid regulations.
Fine Gael’s Richard Truell made the call at this month meeting of the Ballybay-Clones MD as the number of cases in Monaghan continues to rise, and he says Cavan General Hospital come under increasing pressure.
He feels legislation, which is reported to be being considered by the government, should already be in place for Gardaí to impose fines on those flouting the rules, and he says that hitting pockets may be the only way to get some members of the community to ‘cop on’.
Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound councilor Truell said that people need to have some common sense and cop when it comes to tackling the virus.
He also called on people to work together instead of constant negativity and criticism of the Government and decisions that are made.
