An afternoon of events to commemorate the life of Senator Billy Fox, who was murdered by the IRA in 1974, is taking place in Monaghan today.
The events are open to everyone and have been organised to remember the "man of peace" in this, the 50th anniversary year of his death.
Fine Gael Senator Billy Fox from Cortubber was only 34 when he was tragically struck down and he remains the only member of the Oireachtas to be killed during the Troubles.
Plans for today's commemoration include meeting up at the Billy Fox Memorial Park at 1 o'clock where there will be speeches.
Proceedings will continue to Christchurch, Aghnamullen for a service of rememberance followed by the laying of a wreath at Senator Fox's graveside and then the unveiling of a plaque in his memory,
The day will end with refreshments served at Latton GAA Club. Traffic management and park 'n' ride faciltiies will be in operation from noon today.
The Taoiseach will attend the event as will other Fine Gael party colleagues.
