A local Councillor has raised the issue of the long waiting lists that people have to endure in rural areas to see a GP.
Cllr Philip Brady brought a motion before Cavan County Council this week calling on the Minister for Health to urgently look at the issue. Councillors gathered heard that there is currently 1 GP for every 1400 patients and in some locations doctors are not taking on any new patients.
Cllr John Paul Feeley said this brain drain in medicine can not continue with Cllr Brendan Fay saying that common sense is not as common anymore.
Cllr Philip Brady said that a high number of young doctors emigrating and a number of older GP's retiring is making for very challenging. Cllr Brady said that 442 doctors emigrated to Australia in 2022 and he said something needs to be done to keep these medical professionals here.
