"I know I'm not everyone's cup of tea, but if you want an alternative government in the future then you have to make yourself available to represent the people's views"
That's according to Independent councillor, Shane P O'Reilly, who says it is "no surprise" to anyone that he would be putting his name forward in the next general election.
Speaking to Northern Sound, the Mullagh man said he has "always been at the forefront" of raising the issues that people come to him about.
He said that "unfortunately" at this present moment in time, there is only a minority representing the people's views on the ground.
Cllr O'Reilly added that he does not want to run down any Oireachtas member in Monaghan or Cavan but "unfortunately" we have lost sight on what is going on from the bottom up, according to the local representative.
