A local councillor has called for Roderic O’Gorman, the Green Party Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration, and Youth, to resign over his handling of the government’s referendum campaign. Speaking to Northern Sound, Local Aontu Councillor Sarah O Reilly said the people had rejected the government and the Yes/Yes side with a resounding No/No vote.
The Co Cavan Councillor said As a party, Aontú is very pleased with the outcome of the recent referendums, adding it demonstrates a rejection of deeply flawed amendments on family and meaningless referenda on Care, both of which she says were deeply insulting to the electorate. Cllr O Reilly says the government has squandered a valuable opportunity for this generation to update the language of the constitution, to include rather than take out. She added that it has also "squandered" the opportunity to strengthen the rights of parents, children, older people and people with disabilities.
According to Cllr O'Reilly, the 23 million euro that was spent on this election would have done a lot for the people of this country and the Aontu Councillor says it's time Mr O’Gorman "quits."
