A Monaghan councillor has called on Education Minister, Norma Foley to provide the extra resources which are needed for Bus Éireann to provide additional school transport.
Cathy Bennett voiced her concerns in relation to the 'chaos' facing school children and the lack of transport services at a recent Monaghan County Council meeting.
According to Cllr Bennett there are still "many children" across the county who have not received a free bus pass, despite being eligible.
While Cllr Bennett agreed that the waiving of school transport fees was initially a "good plan" she warned that sufficient resources were not in place.
According to Cllr Bennett, local parents are already out a fortune on back to school costs this year.
As a result, a motion was passed that calls on the Education Minister to provide funding for Bus Éireann so that extra services can be provided for the sake of local families.
The motion was seconded by Cllr Noel Keelan, who agreed that additional bus services “should” be put in place.
Speaking at the recent council meeting, Cllr Noel Keelan described the transport crisis as "Deja vu" adding that the same issues arise every year.
He added that additional bus services for school children would be a positive contribution towards climate action, with more children going to school via bus as opposed to travelling in individual cars.
