More than 17,900 children across Cavan and Monaghan are set to benefit from free schoolbooks this September. That's according to local Fianna Fáil TD, Deputy Brendan Smith who says the initiative has been made possible through the provision of over €1.727m worth of funding from the Department of Education.
10,098 pupils in Co Cavan will benefit from €969,408 in funding, while 7,896 children in Co Monaghan will receive free schoolbooks thanks to an investment of €758,016.
Deputy Smith said the development provided "a landmark moment" for Irish education. He added that back-to-school can be a challenging time for parents and families and this latest funding will make education "truly accessible" for all.
"This is a landmark moment for Irish education, and one which will provide significant benefit for families around the country," he explained. "Back-to-school time can be a challenging time for parents and families, and I welcome Minister Foley's commitment to easing the burden.
"We in Fianna Fáil believe in the power of education, and we believe in making education truly accessible for all. This is yet another positive step forward, which I wholeheartedly welcome," said Deputy Smith.
