Monaghan's Chief Fire Officer, Dermot Brannigan has advised locals to ensure that they have a working fire alarm in place this Christmas.
Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, Mr Brannigan said that a fire alarm is the only method of early detection should a fire break out.
With an increase in households set to light fires at home over the festive period, Mr Brannigan has also encouraged people to clean their chimneys and ensure that you have a fire guard.
According to the local fire officer it is "important" for households to ensure that they are not exposed to a chimney fire.
He also pointed out that at this time of the year, electrical appliances are often overloaded so it's important to "turn off and plug out" when not in use:
