More older dogs are being surrendered to animal rescue charities according to one Cavan charity
It comes as local charity, Paws and Claws are raising money to get life saving surgery for a four month old puppy. The puppy named Kojak, or Scaldy, was born without a fully developed Oesophagus leaving him unable to keep food down, and also requires heart surgery. Local charity, Paws and Claws in Cavan Town, rescued Kojak from the streets of Ballinagh and is now looking to give him a new lease of life.
One of the founders of Paws and Claws, Carolyne McCabe, says she has noticed an increase in older dogs being surrendered to be replaced with younger puppies. However she says the generosity of local people is astonishing
"So many people have been so good in taking on the dogs and cats that we have. We wouldn't be able to continue without our community support. Even through the fundraiser, people have been so wonderful in helping us but we just need a little bit more to make sure that little Kojak or as we call him, Scaldy, gets the surgery because if he doesn't, he will die".
