Support groups that offer invaluable assistance to cancer sufferers across the region are not receiving the financial backing they require.
That's according to Deputy Pauline Tully who raised the issue in the Dail in recent days. The local TD highted the work that Ballyjamesduff Cancer Support Fund, CUAN cancer support in Cavan and Crocus Monaghan together with the €1.2 million that has been raised by the Moylagh JFK 50 Mile Challenge committee in the Dáil during a debate on the country’s National Cancer Strategy.
The Cavan-Monaghan TD said while the current national cancer strategy which was published in 2017 had the promise to significant improve the outcomes for cancer patients, the investment that was planned by the government had failed to live up to those expectations. Speaking in the Dail, the local Sinn Féin TD said that these local groups do great work in the community with little or no funding from the government.
