Calls for social media platforms to remove offensive and abusive content "automatically" were made at a meeting of the local Joint Policing Committee in Cavan.
Deputy Brendan Smith told those gathered that there needed to be 'more collaboration between Gardaí and other agencies to address the matter effectively.
He added that the abuse of young people online has become more dangerous and is bringing with it "terrible consequences" for them.
Superintendent Padraig Jones said Gardaí have more control over the situation since the introduction of the Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offences Act 2020.
He added this was particularly the case when it came to the removal of intimate content and photographs, and the subsequent detection of the offender.
