Calls have been made by Monaghan Senator Robbie Gallagher for the introduction of a road safety programme as part of the Leaving Certificate. His calls were in response to a presentation made by Monaghan County Council's Road Safety Officer, Adrian O'Sullivan at a recent JPC meeting.
According to Mr O'Sullivan, there was 'no pattern' in relation to the recent fatalities which have occurred across Co Monaghan.
While Mr O'Sullivan welcomed the road safety measures which were recently introduced by Government, including the reduction of national speed limits, he also pointed to the work carried out by the local authority and Gardaí in terms of road safety and collision prevention.
Speaking at the recent JPC meeting, Senator Gallagher said it was 'clear' that reduced speed limits would not solve the problem as a whole, and that more enforcement was needed.
He added that a road safety programme for students that would form part of the Leaving Cert curriculum would further help the situation and enhance the all-round safety and awareness of people on our roads.
