A Cavan Fianna Fail Councillor says income limits for social housing needs to be changed.
Cllr Philip Brady brought a motion to the monthly Cavan County Council meeting calling on changes to be made to the current threshold for social housing.
According to the local representative, Cavan Council housing section do a great job but an increase of 5,000 euro would make a huge difference. The Cavan Councillor says hardworking people are missing out and he is calling on the housing minister to make a further change in the threshold.
Cllr Patrica Walsh said it's like falling through two stools, with earning too much to not be allowed on the social housing list while not enough money to be able to buy a home or afford the high rents locally.
Cllr Aine Smith said she knew of one family that was 10 euro over the limit and in turn was not allowed to be put on the social housing list in Cavan. Sinn Fein Councillor Stiofan Conaty said it would not entice anyone to work knowing you wouldn't be able to access the housing list if you go over the earnings threshold. Cllr Brady said that Minister Dara O'Brien did increase the income limit in 2023 but more needs to be done.
