A motion was brought to the most recent meeting of Cavan County Council in relation to the roll out of a free vaccine to prevent shingles.
Cllr Clifford Kelly along with Cllr John Paul Feeley raised the issue calling on the local authority to write to the Health Minister to follow the UK's model.
Currently in the UK, over 65s can avail of a free vaccine against shingles. Cllr Kelly said he knows of people living locally that has suffered very severally later in life with the illness.
He highlighted that it costs 500 euro to get the vaccine and the local councillor says that amount may prohibit people from accessing the vaccine. The Co Cavan Councillor had suffered with shingles and knows first-hand that it can be painful and very serious. Cllr Kelly is calling on the health Minister, Stephen Donnelly to act now.
