Cllr Paddy McDonald has called on the Minister for Justice to inform members of Cavan County Council about the length of times it takes to process applications for those seeking international protection.
He says there is a shortage of skilled workers in Ireland and if applications were processed more quickly, many of those arriving here could be offered jobs in the construction, health and hospitality sectors.
Cllr McDonald also highlighted how delays in the current system are having a negative impact on the mental health of those in it.
He told those gathered during a recent meeting of the local authority that working visas could be granted to many skilled workers arriving in Ireland.
Cllr McDonald added that compassion was required for people arriving here who were willing and able to work.
