Michelle Gildernew, Sinn Féin candidate in the Midlands-North-West constituency, has called on Government to scrap the planned hikes on petrol and diesel. The Sinn Fein MEP hopeful called on the government to stop penalising ordinary workers and hard-pressed families with these increases. She said that fuel prices have skyrocketed in recent years, and the latest Fuel Price Survey has increased fears it will now go above €2 a litre. Ms Gildernew says that small business owners, farmers, and the average working family who have no access to decent public transport are some of those who will suffer most.
Speaking to Northern Sound the former MLA said rural dwellers are hit the hardest due to their distance from home to work, school and college. She added that these people simply have no other option but to brave these hikes, but they can't afford them.
