A Cavan man who will represent the Labour party in June's local election says he has seen "no sign" from Government on wanting to rectify issues that are of upmost concern to people. Liam van der Spek was selected as a candidate for the Cavan-Belturbet area at his party's selection convention last week. When asked if a general election could be on the cards, Mr van der Spek said it would do "no harm" to run one.
With a change in Taoiseach, the local candidate "doesn't expect" a big difference in policy between now and the end of the term for the Government. According to the labour representative, issues like healthcare, cost of living and housing in particular are something that people want see to see a change in. Despite this, the Cavan man says he hasn't seen "any sign" from Minister Simon Harris that there will be huge changes on any of those issues.
"Issue like healthcare, cost of living, and housing in particular are things that people want to see a change in," he explained. "I really don't see any sign from Simon Harris that there will be huge changes on any of those issues. There is a lot of demand for real change. Housing has been a huge issue for the country for years now, particularly people from my demographic, young people who are trying to move out of their parents' house or trying to purchase their first home and it's just not changing and I don't think there's really a will from Government."
