Cavan County Council is set to examine the installation of communication boards in all its playgrounds and public amenities to assist non-verbal children.
A communication board is a picture symbol board that can be used to enable a non-verbal child to make comments, requests or give a direction.
The user can gesture, point to, or blink at images on the board to communicate with others.
There is already a communication board in the Holy Family School in Cootehill, as well as the Cavan County Museum.
The motion was proposed by Fianna Fáil's Aiden Fitzpatrick, who received a letter from pupils at the Holy Family School seeking his support in putting forth the idea.
Councillor Fitzpatrick told Shannonside Northern Sound that he hopes to see the boards in playgrounds right across the country:
