Sympathies were expressed to the people of Syria and Turkey during a recent meeting of Monaghan County Council. Cathaoirleach, Cllr Sean Conlon, said his thoughts and prayers were with the families who have lost a loved one; first responders; those who lost their lives; and those who continue to work, in what he described as "unimaginable circumstances."
Cllr PJ O'Hanlon also paid tribute to the people of Turkey and Syria. The Fianna Fáil councillor said he had "never seen" anything like this in his lifetime.
Support for the people of Syria and Turkey was reiterated by representatives right across the council chamber. Meanwhile, the death toll from the catastrophic earthquake that hit both countries has reached over 50,000.
Meanwhile, another powerful earthquake has struck the south of Turkey, causing the death of one person and injuring at least 69 others. The 5-point-6-magnitude tremor struck the town of Yesilyurt, where dozens of buildings collapsed after being damaged in a devastating series of tremors three weeks ago. The Turkish disaster relief agency says teams are working at multiple sites to try to rescue people trapped beneath the rubble.
