Cavan County Council has passed a motion calling on insurance companies operating within the County state clearly if they operate a dual pricing strategy.
"Dual pricing" most commonly occurs where an insurer charges new customers significantly less than customers who are renewing an existing policy.
Renewal customers often pay what has become known as a 'loyalty premium' for not seeking out competition elsewhere.
The motion was raised by Sinn Féin's Paddy McDonald, who told a recent Council meeting that "customers are discriminated against for being loyal and not shopping around".
Paddy McDonald says the "practice is wholly unjustifiable":
