Councillor Sarah O'Reilly says shortages are now at "crisis level".

Cavan County Council has called on Children's Minister Roderic O'Gorman and local Minister Heather Humphreys to "urgently support the Early Years childcare sector and address staff shortages".

The motion was raised by Sarah O'Reilly at a recent meeting, who says shortages are now at "crisis level" and that childcare workers are "surviving on low wages in the sector".

She added that the "low level of government funding means that any sustainable wages in the sector fall upon parents to pay".

Councillor O'Reilly told a recent County Council meeting that "local prices in Cavan are not affordable to many" and called for an increase in funding to childcare providers.

Patricia Walsh seconded the motion, saying the staff "are working for a pittance, can't live on what they are getting paid, and don't get recognition for the work they do".
