The funding was awarded to the local group by Monaghan County Council.

Monaghan County Council has awarded a grant of €5,000 to the Monaghan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) as provided for in its 2024 budget. This money assists the MSPCA to investigate animal welfare complaints from the public and to pay for the veterinary treatment of stray and wild animals found in the county, in particular cats. Stray cats and feral or wild cats are common in Monaghan and can cause problems in certain areas where easy access to food and rapid breeding leads to large populations developing in a matter of months.

The MSPCA has agreements in place for the subsidised neutering of cats with 3 veterinary practices in the county - All Creatures Vets, Monaghan Veterinary Surgery and Carrick Veterinary Centre. The Council's money was used primarily for this purpose in 2023 and contributed to the cost of neutering 197 female cats, 114 male cats and the euthanasia and disposal of 8 sick or injured cats at the 3 veterinary practices.
