A Clones councillor has raised his concerns over a "substantial" report of fish kill along the Monaghan/Fermanagh border. According to Cllr Pat Treanor, local anglers are up in arms over the incident which occurred in the Lackey River at Munnilly Bridge.
In a statement issued to Northern Sound, Inland Fisheries Ireland said it was "notified" of the issue which is now being dealt with by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.
IFI staff are also liaising with colleagues from the agency and the latter is carrying out further examination of the matter.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Treanor highlighted that the Lackey River has been polluted on a number of occasions, with "very little" action taken by the relevant authorities to get to the bottom of the problem.
He added that local anglers put a lot of hard work into stocking rivers and keeping them right, however they feel "frustrated" when the work they do "means nothing" to the agencies who claim to be responsible for water quality.
"The incident was reported to both the fisheries board in Monaghan and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency who were on the scene quite quickly in fairness to them," explained Cllr Treanor.
"However, some of the anglers who have been in touch with me are deeply frustrated over the situation. The only information they have received back from the relevant authorities is that the samples and evidence which were taken from the river have showed up as inconclusive. People are now very concerned that this issue is not being dealt with in a serious enough manner."
