A Cavan/Monaghan addiction treatment service has noticed the development of a crack cocaine problem in Cavan.
Recent figures show that the number of people seeking treatment for cocaine addiction has tripled since 2013, with it now overtaking cannabis as the second highest drug treatment is sought for.
Tim Murphy from the Cavan/Monaghan Drug and Alcohol Service says the upward trend of cocaine use in the region is similar to that of the figures seen nationally, and tends to be a similar demographic of predominantly men in their 30’s.
In Cavan 21 people were admitted for treatment for cocaine use in 2019 and he says that the drug is now mainstream and the norm for many on a Saturday night, often being paired with alcohol
