The Government intends to renew the prospecting licence for a company to continue exploring numerous sites across counties Cavan and Monaghan for gold. Conroy Gold, with a business address in Dublin, has been prospecting for gold in the Northern Sound region for several years now.
The company is now seeking to renew its licence, which entitles it to "explore for mineral deposits but does not authorise mining of the minerals". According to a public notice issued by the the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communication the prospecting activities permissible under a licence are, in general, "non-invasive and of minimal environmental impact."
The licence would allow Conroy Gold to prospect for minerals in many townlands across the Cremone, Dartree, Monaghan and Tullygarvey baronies. In February, the prospecting firm identified five gold targets in Monaghan and discovered gold-in-bedrock at Slieve Glah in Cavan.
