The Carrickmacross-Castleblayney MD is to send a letter to Garda Gary Sheehan's mother, Margaret Sheehan, recognising his achievement of posthumously receiving a Gold Scott medal.
The Scott Medal is awarded for the 'most exceptional bravery and heroism involving the risk of life in the execution of duty'.
Gary Sheehan was one of 15 people to receive a Scott medal at a recent ceremony for the events surrounding the November 1983 kidnapping of businessman Don Tidey by the IRA.
The kidnapping led to a nationwide manhunt, eventually leading Gardai to Derrada Woods in Leitrim.
Mr Tidey was freed when the hideout was discovered on December 16th, 1983, but Garda Gary Sheehan from Carrickmacross was shot dead.
Cathaoirleach of the MD, PJ O'Hanlon, knew the late garda and hailed him "as one of our own".
He added that Mr Sheehan's sacrifice must never be forgotten.
