Cavan golfer Leona Maguire has been described as a "shining light" for other female golfers across the country. The local sporting sensation claimed her second LPGA win yesterday in the Mijer Classic in Michigan. Maguire shot four birdies and an eagle in her final six holes to clinch victory.
Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, golf correspondent with the Irish Times, Philip Reid described Leona as a "pioneer" of the sport who has influenced a large number of up and coming female golfers.
He added that the Cavan native is one of the most "focused" and "hardworking" athletes across the golfing profession. "Leona really is a pioneer of the sport," he explained.
"There's a conveyor belt of young girls coming through the system who look up to Leona. She is so focused and I don' think there is anyone who works as hard on their game as Leona does."
