Cavan Sinn Fein TD Pauline Tully believes one of the primary drivers of homelessness include legal evictions and rent increases.
The Sinn fein TD was recently speaking in the Dail on a new bill that aims to provide increased protection for those at risk of homelessness,
She highlighted how that this was evident in her own constituency of Cavan-Monaghan, where she has witnessed a large increase in the number of people contacting her offices who have been served with such notices.
Deputy Tully said that people receiving these notices were faced with little option in the private sector when trying to find alternative accommodation.
Meanwhile, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has recorded 81 people in the north-east region, which includes counties Cavan, Monaghan and Louth, as homeless.
The local TD added that more action should be taken to keep families in their homes and prevent them from entering homelessness in the first instance.
