"Everyday people are taking life into their own hands at Whitegate Cross." That's according to Cllr Shane P O'Reilly who believes that the people of East Cavan have been "let down" by the lack of action taken to address safety concerns at the busy junction. The Mullagh native shared his frustrations to Northern Sound over yet another "standard response" which he recently received on behalf of the National Roads Authority, along with the TII after consultation with Bus Éireann and a number of other stakeholders.
The response confirmed that the junction at Whitegate Cross will be looked at in the overall picture of the bypass in Virginia which will not be finalised until 2031. Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr O'Reilly said that the people of East Cavan have asked for "very little" and that this latest response is "extremely disheartening."
Cllr O'Reilly; "It's not right. We're asking for something that can be so simply dealt with, yet we are met with a brick wall every time. This issue has been raised in the Oireachtas just once in the last 20 years. I think the only thing that's left for us to do now is that we'll have to block the N3 entirely and cause as much trouble as possible. It's a very militant and archaic way of looking at things, but the only way that we're going to get satisfaction perhaps is to cause as much trouble as possible for someone to sit up and listen as this is out of the remit of our own local authorities here in Cavan."
