The last remaining peat briquette plant in the country is closing its doors today. Operations at Derrinlough peat factory in Co Offaly was due to wind down by the end of the year, but has ceased earlier than planned.
Bord na Móna says all 62 staff have been redeployed to other parts of the business. Divisional Organiser for energy at SIPTU, Adrian Kane, says the closure of the briquette factory is a huge loss to the area:
"From a part of the country that has been reliant on Bord na Móna and the ESB for the last 50 years, to see the end of the briquette factor is a big loss to the workers themselves, the communities, and to the vibrancy of the towns of villages in Offaly," he added.
