The largest-ever deployment of Irish aid is being dispatched to Turkey and Syria after the earthquake disaster. Blankets, tents, heating equipment and basic kitchen and cooking utensils are being flown out today.
They're to be distributed by GOAL and CONCERN teams already on the ground. A second shipment of Irish stocks from a UN facility in Italy will take place later this week. Junior Foreign Affairs Minister, Sean Fleming, said Ireland's expertise was in providing humanitarian aid.
He stated, "In terms of basic essentials to keep people alive, giving them accommodation and shelter that is the expertise of Irish people. Other bigger countries are good with brining in the heavy equipment to deal with the dangerous buildings but our expertise is dealing with the families, women, children and men who are homeless, starving, freezing and we want to help them."
