Lakeland Dairies in Cavan has been granted planning permission for the installation of a Liquefied Natural Gas Plant.
The works will be carried out at its Killeshandra site on the Church Road, and the compound will house two 150 metre cubed horizontal tanks and two ambient vaporisers.
Permission has also been granted for the removal of heavy fuel oil tanks and boilers, which will be replaced with new boilers and air emission stacks.
The Planners Report says a move away from heavy fuel oil to LNG will provide significant energy savings and will emit 30% less carbon dioxide.
Other energy alternatives, such as biomass and wind and solar were considered, but neither were deemed feasible.
