SIPTU members laid off by Nuremore Hotel in Carrickmacross have demanded payment of wages owed to them. Workers were laid off for 12 weeks on the 1st of January on the understanding that the hotel would undergo renovations.
However, no works have started and SIPTU Organiser, John Regan, says the hotel appears to have closed down. He says the company is endeavouring to force workers into terminating their own employment by way of redundancy.
Mr Regan added that workers who are laid of for 13 weeks are entitled to redundancy. "It's bad enough being laid off for any worker but to be short-changed by way of wages and holiday entitlement is just adding more injury to it.
"Then you have a situation where no communications is happening; management are there but they are not brining in any of the workers to have conversations with them whether that be good, bad or indifferent. They have completely shut down the avenue of communications with workers and that is very worrying," he said.
