The lack of early intervention places in primary schools has been highlighted by Cllr Áine Smith. The Fianna Fail Councillor received unanimous support for her motion at the most recent sitting of Cavan County Council calling for a discussion on the issue. She told the other sitting councillors that every child should have the best possible chance of leading a full, happy and healthy life, especially those diagnosed with autism. Cllr Smith says through early diagnosis and early interventions, it can lead to the best outcomes for parents and the child involved.
She added that by recognising autism early, this means targeted support can be provided for children. "We're coming across it at the doorsteps all of the time," explained Cllr Smith. "I've been canvassing for a good while now at this stage and it's so sad to hear these stories and parents are trying to do their best. By recognising autism early this means that targeted supports can be provided for the children which allows them to reach academic and social high performance by focusing on things like developing their communication and social skills."
