Once known as the "Croke Park of the North" Kingspan Breffni is celebrating 100 years since its official opening. To mark the special occasion, members of Cavan GAA County Board have organised an array of events starting from today until Saturday the 29th of July.
Cornafean native George Cartwright is a former Chairperson of the Cavan GAA County Board and has also launched a new book titled 'Breffni Park to Kingspan Breffni - Celebrating 100 Years' in honour of the milestone.
Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, the local author says this week is all about celebrating the achievements of the club and the community of people who now call the stadium home.
According to Mr Cartwright, the initial development of the pitch was a "huge undertaking" at the time as Ireland was in the throes of the Civil War.
Despite this, Cavan GAA set up a grounds committee to further the prospect of having a park.
Mr Cartwright added that "credit" must be paid to the six men on that committee who park their political differences and worked together to develop the pitch.
"The committee was set up in December 1922 and the Civil War was still raging," he explained. "They had a huge volume of work to do but they did it and six months later the park was opened and we believe it was the first to be owned by a county committee at that time."
