The Launch of the Killyconny Bog film takes place tonight at 8pm in St Killian's Heritage Centre in Mullagh. The 25-minute long documentary-style film includes information about why the peatland habitat is so important; the wildlife and local history of the bog; and its importance in storing Carbon from the perspective of Climate Change.
Special guest will be Seán McDonagh, Columban priest, author and ecologist, who is an outspoken critic of the degradation of the environment. Speaking to Northern Sound, Sinead Fox, secretary of the Killyconny Bog Project, said the effort is part of national Biodiversity Week, which is kicking off on Monday.
She added that the Co Cavan bog has now become an area of international significance. The main part of the bog itself - the heather area - has a huge amount of insects, bird life and bees that are supported by that eco system.
"Then we have the Sphagnum moss and the matchstick lichen; there is a huge amount of lichen and a huge amount of native species growing in that habitat," Sinead said.
