Justice Minister called on to set up cross-border crime agency to tackle drugs trade

Brendan Smith says more needs to be done to tackle the drugs trade along the border.

The Justice Minister has been called on to set up a cross-border crime agency to tackle criminality on both sides of the border.

The Dáil yesterday was told of cross-border drugs trade and the impact it's having on the local area.

Local Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Smith praised the PSNI and Gardaí for their work but called for a cross-border crime agency which would have a statutory role.

He said the joint taskforce which is already operating has been successful in tackling fuel smuggling and other crimes but more needs to be done to tackle the drugs trade.

Justice Minister and local TD Heather Humphreys said police services on both sides of the border already have a high level of co-operation:
